In terms of defeating lords, one option is to hang around a battle between two lords (preferably of factions that already dislike you). If you have a full party, don't feel bad about releasing bad or wounded soldiers to replace them with better soldiers freed from a defeated lord. The easiest source of men at this time is mercenary camps, but you can get better soldiers by taking prisoners from a lord with a lot of captives. Most units only have one available promotion. I'm not sure if you've played the first Mount & Blade or Warband, but WFaS is different in that you can't raise someone from a peasant to a knight. Since you don't have many available units, it's important to make them of as high quality as possible. Some of the special quests in WFaS have large experience rewards which are meaningful at lower levels, so ask any and all lords for tasks and special quests. Gaining experience is possible by killing a lot of enemy soldiers (guns are a fun addition, but the easiest way to get a lot of kills is just riding around on your horse slashing enemies in the back) or by completing quests. The easiest way to get renown is to fight difficult battles (where the enemy has more troops than you). In addition to being able to increase your party size with charisma and leadership, each 25 renown gives you another party member (it might be a different figure in WFaS, but it definitely increases party size).
